I was always intrigued by official documents from the old times — metal type printing, multiple typefaces, thoughtful layout and collectible quality. Then, there comes Microsoft Word. Everything changes to putting as much information (screaming in our faces) as possible. Digital efficiency somehow kills the beauty of those papers that are meant to hold in hands. Here are some of my attempts to make official forms to be a bit more enjoyable :)

Villains are made, not created. Every villain from our childhood seems to be evil by default, which is a bias in itself. In this project, I created a series of mini story books (for tiny hands) that tells the background stories of some of the famous villains — how they became who they are.

This was a brand identity redesign concept for Eat Offbeat, a caterer delivers authentic ethnic meals that are conceived, prepared and delivered by refugees in NYC. The goal of this project was to give Eat Offbeat a modern look while emphasize its multicultural authenticity. Eventually, they turned to Pentagram for their real rebrand.

For my college thesis, I wanted to escape 2D realm. So, I created a physical, interactive experience. It measures the mutual trust between acquaintances in specific situations. By the end of each test, the closer the participants, the more they trust each other — the physical distance between participants visualizes their invisible boundary.

This was an etiquette poster campaign I created for Bay Area Rapid Transit, as known as “BART.” With a list of customers complaints, BART asked us to create a fun, cheeky, buzz-creating campaign that encourages behavior change or cooperation. This poster series addresses elevator cleanliness, littering, and riding behaviors.

TBD* is an in-house, student-run design studio at California College of Arts that provides pro bono design service to Bay Area nonprofits. After co-created the studio’s identity, I animated the logo and designed/ built TBD*’s website.

A leader of Chimera student council asked me to animate their logo and bring Chimera to life. Chimera is the mascot and symbol of CCA. A Chimera is a mythical creature made up of lion, goat, and snake—three distinct identities that culminate in a single form and represent an apex of strength, knowledge, and skill.

A ‘book-about-a-block’ project. The ‘spying’ theme of this project was started from graphic research on the 3rd street between Mariposa street and 18th street in San Francisco, and inspired by the windows on building façades on that block. As an extension of the book, The Game of Spying, PEEP is a physical board game takes the form of Chutes and Ladders.

Probably my first exhibition project ever. In September 2015, CCA’s graphic design program launched a 100 Day Project. Each of the participating students and faculty members selected a creative action to do and document every day for 100 days. The project concluded on December 18. 100 Day Project Show was an exhibition of the 100 Day Projects.

My friends and I created an unofficial and anonymous mascot for California College of the Arts —Max, who rapidly became friends with 1,783 CCA students, or 80% of the CCA community.

An experimental education program. Lead by AIGA Medalist John Bielenberg, Secret Project uses ‘thinking wrong’ methodology to create transformative experiences for college students and young professionals through proposing creative solutions to partners’ social and business challenges.
